Vets handle Fusion carefully

Date: 09/Sep/2007
In hopes of expanding our Vets activities in Bangkok, the Veterans League arranged a casual friendly with one of Bangkok Premier League's newcomers, Storming Fusion.

A quick e-mail went out to all the Vets League team captains, and in a flash, we had a team:
    • Veterans League
        - Eralp (M)
    • Debsirin Grads
        - Permkiat
        - "Aoe"
        - "Denn"
    • Irish Xchange
        - Chris
        - Eric
        - Hiroshi
    • LeCoq French
        - Christophe
        - Frederic
        - Marc
    • Sunbelt United
        - Preben
        - Keith
    • Anatolian Turks
        - Adem
        - Beyhan
        - Yilmaz
    • Scandinavian Vikings
        - Svend
    • Winking Frog
        - Steve (C)

In a strange and unprecedented twist, the Captains agreed to play the match as a 3 periods x 30 minutes match — something unheard of before! The Referees were so instructed, and they were also baffled like never seen before!

The Starting-11 was decided as follows, allowing a formation in more depth than width.

Fwd. Chris Hiroshi
Mid. Adem Yilmaz Beyhan
Permkiat
Def. Christopher Marc Svend
Eric
GK "Aoe"

Substitutes Bench:
   • Preben
   • Frederic
   • Keith
   • Steve
   • "Denn"
   • Eralp

1st Period:
After the initial pleasantries, handshakes and photo-shoots, the game surprisingly got started at 2:00 pm sharp (for a change!). Luckily, we had 11 players on site early on, and those who got lost or went to the "the other" Samitivej Hospital made their way to the substitutes bench shortly after the kickoff.

In what seemed like a midfield tussle right away, we were able to turn the game to our advantage within 10 min of the kickoff, through a nicely taken goal by Chris upfront.

And, following the goal, the game got stock in the midfield for long spells where, at times, you could find upto 14 players from both sides fighting for their own little fiefdoms in the center circle.

Adding insult to injury, in hopes of confusing the spectators (players and the Referees already having been through it), when the 1st period break whistle was blown, all players hoped that their coaches instruct them to do something about the midfield lockup.

    • First Break ==> Veterans 1 - 0 Fusion

2nd Period:
The 2nd Period, the Vets seemed more organized, doing a lot of running all over the pitch, and using the outsides and the wings, Nevertheless, Fusion defence held up valiantly to all the incising runs of Yilmaz from the left wing, and Chris and Hiroshi from the dead center. And, the score stayed unchanged.

    • Second Break ==> Veterans 1 - 0 Fusion

3rd Period:
Early in the 3rd Period, Chris got his 2nd, on a nice tricky shot. Shortly after, Chris found his hat-trick when one of his shots got deflected into the goal by Fusion defence.

Towards the end of the match, off of a smartly placed pass from Marc towards the left corner flag, Eralp barely got a hold of the ball on the left touch-line and made his long-wide-right-curve-run all the way the edge of the 6-yard-box, where he spotted wildly screaming Keith for a pass. A simple flick to the right, and unmistakably, Keith was there to slot the ball in from the top of the 6-yard-box to the bottom-right corner. And, that meant the end of the game.

    • Full Time ==> Veterans 4 - 0 Fusion

Overall:
Overall, the Vets had a great outing, and deserved their win. In our distinctive Ronaldinho Orange shirts, the funny side of the whole thing for me was to hear the Fusion defence continually screaming "Who's covering that number 10 over there?" ..!

Thanks to all the many Vets who showed up to make the day a memorable one, especially great defence from Eric and Steve.

And, big thanks to Fusion Manager, Kenji, for agreeing to put on the friendly match.

Looking forward to next friendly.

Kind regards,
-Eralp

Summary:
From: Steve
Team: Winking Frog
Date: 02/Aug/2007

In this friendly, the Veterans League Stars boasted a mixed bag of nationalities including French, Danish, Turkish, English, Scottish, Aussie, Thai, Japanese and Palestinian.

The match started slowly with the Vets taking the upper hand in early exchanges. The Vets took time to utilize the width of the pitch with most of the combat taking place in the middle-third of the pitch.

The first goal came from Chris from a cross. This settled the Vets. Fusion failed to make any headway against the solid defence of the Vets. No more goals came in the 1st Period of the match.

The game continued in the same manner with the Vets creating most of the chances, and unfortunately missing most of them. A number of questionable offside decisions left the players bewildered with one of the Linesmen, but we soon realized his real job was to update the scoreboard!

The Vets finally killed of a brave Fusion resistance with a further 2 goals from Chris, and one more from Keith. The goal of the game was scored by "Pele" Keith (same age), a splendid finish from a rarely seen burst of pace from EG as he left the Fusion defence in his wake to deliver a superb cutback to Keith.

Although our goalkeeper was more or less redundant throughout the whole match, he kept his concentration to make a good block which saved Eric's blushes when he was outpaced by Fusion forward in the waning minutes.

Unluckiest player of the day was Preben who received a bloody nose and gashed shin for all his efforts!

A good effort by all, and a game played in good spirit.

Steve
