Oct/2007 Vets League conclude with Cosmos as repeat champions

Date: 10/Oct/2007
Vets League repeated another high-mark this month, having a total of 20 teams compete in the tournament (similar to 20-team, 68-match tournament of Jun/2007), with 2 new teams on board:
    • John Smiths (a.k.a. re-branded Irish Xchange)
    • Medical Gear
and, of course, the venerable:
    • Team-X Volunteers

Frankly, the 20-team tournaments are a beauty to organize — make the 5 groups x 4 teams format, and let the teams play with each other in their own groups, and let the games run smoothly — 4 games in the groups and 3 games in the knockout rounds. Love it!

Well . . . . . that all, of course, much depends on the time of the first kickoff, which if doesn't happen at 1:00 pm definitely causes the end of the tournament to sag into the early hours of the night. Yes, this month's competition was one of those days, and as you'll see in some of the pictures below, we had to call on the lighting experts (i.e., nearby parked cars) to allow us to finish all the games this month.

So, at the beginning of the day, we held our Captains Meeting, and did the groups draw. At first glance, there were some unique pairings in the groups:
    • Group-A: Cosmos and LesGaulois
    • Group-B: LeCoq and British Club
    • Group-C: All 4 Thai teams — Enfant, Nextstep, Yingcharoen, Medicals
    • Group-D: Anatolia and Winking Frog

And, once the group matches were over, we saw some surprising Top-2 finishers:
    • Group-A: Amadeus and Cosmos (LesGaulois a victim)
    • Group-B: John Smiths and British Club (LeCoq a victim)
    • Group-C: Nextstep and Campioni (other Thai teams biting the dust)
    • Group-D: Winking Frog and Anatolia (no surprises here!)

The Knockout rounds saw some more exciting matches:
  • Shield QFs:
    • LesGaulois 2-1 LeCoq <== 2nd-ever encounter of the 2 French teams
  • Cup QFs:
    • Winking Frog 2-0 Campioni
    • Yingcharoen 0-2 BU Japan

The competition started heating up in the SFs:
  • Shield SFs:
    • LesGaulois 1-0 Enfant
  • Plate SFs:
    • Amadeus 4-1 Anatolia
  • Cup SFs:
    • Cosmos 2-0 Winking Frog

Before the final rounds kicked off, we witnessed a much unnoticed match taking place between Hotspot and Yingcharoen, all the way on pitch #17! somewhere out there, for the glory of not winning this month's BadCup!, hoping maybe the hard-working Hotspot may end up with some glory after losing 5 straight matches so far. Well . . . . . it wasn't meant to be, and Hotspot finished the day firmly owning their "first-ever" BadCup!

When we concluded the final rounds of the 3 divisions, the teams standing tall were:
  • Shield GF:
  • Plate GF:
    • Amadeus 0-2 John Smiths
  • Cup GF:
    • Cosmos 2-0 British Club

Yes, another worthy victory for Cosmos, and another great day of Vets football. Congratulations to all!

At the end of the day, the following were the full list of rankings:
    1) Cosmos <== Champ!
    2) British Club
    3) Winking Frog
    4) Nextstep
    5) John Smiths <== Plate!
    6) Amadeus
    7) Campioni
    8) Anatolia
    9) LesGaulois <== Shield!
    10) BSL Veterans
    11) Enfant
    12) Japan FC
    13) LeCoq

    15) Medicals
    16) Team-X
    17) BU Japan <== Bowl!
    18) Swiss

Here's the complete scores of the day ==>

My usual thanks go to Hotspot's Gonzague and Yingcharoen's Sirichai for their generous offer help throughout the day.

Looking forward to seeing you in next month's Vets League Sunday.

Kind regards,
-Eralp

Picture 6 — The BSL Veterans looked rather bare-bones this month.

Picture 23 — Champ! Cosmos, although missing their influential leader Mauro on the ranks this month, always bring an invincible squad to the Vets League.

Picture 24 — Although BSL Veterans go home empty-handed today (with a respectable 10th place ranking), Captain Roland can't resist the temptation for photo-op with the Formula-1 Trophy Girls before the trophy presentations.

Picture 30 — John Smiths's maestro Kevin handling the fragile Plate! (5th overall) trophy carefully.

Picture 31 — Winking Frog's respected captain Kevin going home with yet another 3rd place trophy.

Picture 32 — Always joyful Wayne from British Club much rejuvenated with their 2nd place trophy in his hands.

Picture 33 — The one-handed catch form Cosmos's Emilio in carrying their yet another championship trophy.

Picture 34 — Cosmos strike a pose as a team at the end of the day.

Picture 35 — And, those who put in the full work today in showcasing on the tournament, Hotspot's Preben & Gonzague and Eralp the Organizer, get the best picture of the day with the Formula-1 Trophy Girls.

EG,

Several things:
  1. (With gritted teeth) Congrats to Cosmos for their masterclass performance!
  2. Re-branding of Vets combined side is a good idea. Is there anyone out there willing to sponsor the side? Sponsorship funds could go towards branded shirts, pitch rental and "refreshments".
  3. The MBMG Winking Frog team is still seeking a goalkeeper (or two), so if anyone fancies a regular weekend game, please contact me. The WFFC has a friendly next Saturday which would be an ideal time for new players to come along.

Finally, thanks for your continued hard work and enthusiasm in organising the monthly football marathon that is the Vets League.

Cheers,
Graham
